Learning About Sewer Overflows

How frequently do our sewers overflow?

Not all overflows discharge every time it rains – in fact, some overflows will go months or years without discharging. Since the predictability of overflows is influenced by many factors, such as the rate and amount of rain that falls over a given period and area, soil conditions and past rain events, overflow frequency cannot be fully determined. In other words, overflows are dependent on both the immediate area conditions, as well as the upstream (or up river) conditions. While overflow prediction is difficult to determine, MSD knows the locations of outfalls or pipes from which overflows could occur.
